"So this is Christmas"
Nella settimana che precede il Natale, gli studenti della Scuola superiore per mediatori linguistici di Pisa approfondiranno le conoscenze relative alle tradizioni natalizie anglosassoni, attraverso l’analisi dei testi e l’ascolto delle musiche, dei canti e delle carole della tradizione natalizia anglosassone, selezionati tra i seguenti titoli:
Happy Xmas (War is over); Oh Happy day; White Christmas; Last Christmas; Jingle Bells; Do they Know it’s Christmas Time; Silent Night, Holy Night; Auld Lang Syne; We Wish you a Merry Christmas; I Wish it Could be Christmas Everyday; Merry Christmas Everybody; The Christmas Song; Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas; Rudolph th Red Nosed Reindeer; Frosty the Snowman; Lonely This Christmas; Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree; Santa Claus is Coming to Town; Mary’s Boy Child; Mistletoe and Wine; God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen; Deck the Halls; Piva Piva; O Tannenbaum; O Come, All Ye Faithful.
E’ inoltre previsto lo scambio degli auguri, con il tradizionale assaggio del panettone e del pandoro e il brindisi di fine anno.
The carol, deriving from the French carol, originated in the 12th century as a sung round-dance. Carols were of several kinds – dramatic, narrative or lyrical – and they were often sung to popular melodies. They were marked by simplicity and directeness, vigorous rhythms and straightforward harmonies.
Despite attempts by the medieval church to suppress it, the carol prospered as the most popular form of expression for the common people at Christmas services, where it ousted the more austere Gregorian chant preferred by the authorities. The carol even survived a parliamentary edict of Cromwell’s time that abolished Christmas Day altogether.
During the 19th century, as Christmas turned into a secular holiday and became more commercialised, the name ‘carol’ became attached to a wider variety of Christmas hymns, songs and ballads, not all of which were of a particularly high quality.
The best, however, have achieved a lasting place alongside the folk-carols and older compositions from many countries that make up the repertoire of Christmas carols familiar to everyone today. |
